La Terrazza sul Mare - Bed & Breakfast on Sicily

Marvelous views from the "terrace above the sea" at Avola. What the name implies is a fact: only about 50 m lie between B&B La Terrazza sul Mare and the sea. There is a small sandy beach right below the property. Only about 300 m off, there is a longer sandy beach, which is partly with service.

The small, family-run B&B is located in the district of Lido di Avola in the southeast of Sicily. Kindness and hospitality are of great importance to family Monello, who lives on the first floor of the house.

The altogether four guest rooms on the second floor are generously laid out and tastefully furnished in the Arte Povera style typical for Southern Italy. Standard furnishing includes air conditioning/heating, mini bar, safe and TV as well as a bathroom with shower/WC/Bidet.

Each of the two rooms we have chosen for you opens onto a small balcony with marvelous sea view.   

Upon request, we can check availability of and arrange for the spacious family room for up to four persons with two adjoining bedrooms, one bathroom and a large terrace with lateral sea view. 

The owners also rent a small ground floor apartment for two to four persons (double bed and studio couch) with built-in kitchen, dining furniture and terrace.

It is great to simply relax in the garden with its splendor of Mediterranean plants and well-tended lawn. Sun beds, small tables and chairs provide for an atmosphere of ease – and the view of the sea tops off the "dolce far niente", the "sweetness of doing nothing". 

On blue-sky days you might prefer to have breakfast outdoors. Of course, you can also remain in the breakfast room with lounge and reception area. The large picture windows and the view of the garden give you the feeling of sitting out in the open. A sofa corner with Sat-TV and WiFi provides for a comfortable atmosphere.

Parking is available on the fenced property.

It is not far from La Terrazza sul Mare – Salumeria "Il Terrone", which is open year-round for lunch and for dinner and offers local specialties – ideal for a small snack at lunchtime or a light evening meal. You may also profit from a special service Il Terrone offers: packed lunches, for example, for picnics at the beach.

Restaurants are found about 100 m off, stores in the center of Lido di Avola about 400 m off.

For dinner – if desired and upon request – family Monello organizes a catering service, which specializes in sea food dishes. And, do not hesitate to ask the owners for local specialties such as almond milk, almond sorbet and almond cookies as well as the famous Nero d’Avola wine.

Whether you wish to explore the hinterland on horseback, go on a boat tour with local fishermen or go diving in underwater grottoes or whether you are on the lookout for scenic hiking and cycling tours – the Monellos, who run an "Azienda Agricola" upcountry, know the land and its people like the backs of their hands.

Avola is an ideal starting point for a discovery tour of the numerous sights and sites along the south-eastern coast of Sicily. Siracusa, about 25 km off and once one of the most powerful metropolises of the western world, fascinates you with its wonderfully preserved Old Town of Ortigia, which has rightfully been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Not far from Siracusa lies another World Heritage Site – the necropolis of Pantalica with its more than 5000 tomb caves. Baroque splendor awaits visitors at Noto, about 10 km from Avola. The "riserve naturali" in the southeast offer untouched nature. The gorge of Anapo, the Cava Grande valley near Cassibile and the coastal stretch of Vendicari amaze you with their fantastic landscapes, rich flora and fauna and rare species of animals.
