La Terrazza sul Mare - Bed & Breakfast at Avola

Marvelous views from La Terrazza sul Mare, the "terrace above the sea" at Avola in the southeast of Sicily. What the name implies is a fact - only about 50 m lie between the B&B and the sea. There's a small sandy beach right below the property. A longer sandy beach, partly with service, is only ca. 300 m off.

Owning family Monello, who runs the small B&B and lives on the 1st floor, highly values cordiality and hospitality.

The guest rooms of B&B La Terrazza sul Mare

The guest rooms are spacious and tastefully furnished in the Arte Povera style typical of southern Italy. Standard furnishing includes air conditioning/heating, minibar, safe and TV. Some of the rooms have got a small balcony with a marvelous view of the sea.

The apartments

On request, we can also arrange for one of the two apartments at the B&B. One is located on the ground floor and one on the 1st floor.

The 40 m² one-room apartment on the ground floor easily accommodates a couple or a family with a small child (extra bed). The kitchen unit is well appointed and you can enjoy your meals either inside or on the beautiful terrace with sea view.

The apartment on the 1st floor accommodates up to four persons. The centerpiece of the apartment is the eat-in kitchen, which opens onto the balcony with sea view. The two double bedrooms have got an en suite bathroom each.

In the B&B's garden, the splendor of Mediterranean plants, the well-tended lawn, sun loungers, small tables and chairs provide for an atmosphere of ease, of dolce far niente, which is topped off by the view of the sea. 

On blue-sky days, and in general when weather conditions allow, you can enjoy your breakfast outdoors. Of course, there is also an inside breakfast area, where large picture windows and a view of the garden make you feel (almost) like sitting out in the open. Across from the breakfast area lie the reception and lounge area with SAT-TV and WiFi reception.

Parking is available on the fenced property.

Salumeria "Il Terrone" is only a very short walk from La Terrazza sul Mare. It is open year-round for lunch and for dinner and offers local specialties – ideal for a small snack at lunchtime or a light evening meal. Packed lunches are a special service they offer at Il Terrone's and worth considering in case you want to have a picnic at the beach, for example.

Restaurants are found about 100 m, stores in the center of Lido di Avola about 400 m from the B&B.

Tips for excursions by the owning family

If you are interested in insiders' tips for active holidays, family Monello is happy to provide them. Whether you wish to explore the hinterland on horseback, go on a boat tour with local fishermen or go diving in underwater grottos or whether you are on the lookout for scenic hiking and cycling tours – the Monellos, who run an "Azienda Agricola" upcountry, know the land and its people like the backs of their hands.

Avola is an ideal starting point for a discovery tour of the numerous sights/sites along the south-eastern coast of Sicily. Siracusa, about 25 km off and once one of the most powerful metropolises of the western world, fascinates you with its wonderfully preserved and UNESCO World Heritage listed Old Town of Ortigia.

Not far from Siracusa lies another World Heritage Site – the necropolis of Pantalica with its more than 5,000 tomb caves. Baroque splendor awaits visitors at Noto, about 10 km from Avola. The riserve naturali in the southeast welcome you with untouched nature. The Anapo gorge, the Cava Grande valley near Cassibile and the coastal stretch of Vendicari amaze you with their fantastic landscapes, rich flora and fauna and rare species of animals.
