The fishing village of Donnalucata is a real insiders’ tip if you want to spend wonderful days at the seaside and, at the same time, get to know the Baroque culture of southern Sicily.
Donnalucata’s history dates back to the 11th century, when the Norman Count Ruggero d’Altavilla, according to legend with the help of the Blessed Virgin Mary, defeated the Saracens and then erected a pilgrimage chapel (santuario). In the course of the centuries, the village by the sea then developed around the church and the watch tower.
At Donnalucata, far from mass tourism, you experience idyllic everyday village life. People there still live mainly on farming and fishing. Every morning, the fish market takes place at the harbor. A real experience for your senses!
In the center of Donnalucata, you find bars, stores and restaurants. After visiting the fish market in the morning, stop at one of the bars for a "colazione italiana" (Italian breakfast) of cappuccino and fresh cornetto.
In the evening, savor a delicious fish dish at one of the restaurants and, afterwards, take a romantic walk along the gorgeous seaside promenade.
At Donnalucata those who know the Commissario Montalbano movies are reminded of or recognize some of the crime series’ settings. Scenes from "La voce del violin" ("The Voice of the Violin"), "Il cane di terracotta" ("The Terracotta Dog") and "La forma dell'acqua" ("The Shape of Water"), for example, were shot here.
Movie scenes were also shot at other towns, amongst others at Scicli, Modica and Ragusa.
