The fishing village of Donnalucata is a real insiders’ tip if you want to spend a fantastic time at the seaside and, at the same time, get to know the Baroque culture of southern Sicily.
Donnalucata’s history dates back to the 11th century, when the Norman Count Ruggero d’Altavilla, according to legend with the help of the Blessed Virgin Mary, defeated the Saracens and then erected a pilgrimage chapel (in Italian: santuario). In the course of the centuries, the village by the sea then developed around the church and the watch tower.
In this place, far from mass tourism, vacationers experience idyllic everyday village life. People here still live mainly on farming and fishing. Every morning, the fish market takes place at the harbor. A real experience for your senses!
In the center of Donnalucata, you find bars, stores and restaurants. After visiting the fish market in the morning, you might stop to enjoy a cappuccino and a fresh cornetto, i.e. a "colazione italiana" (in English: Italian breakfast).
In the evening, you might savor a delicious fish dish at one of the restaurants and, afterwards, take a romantic walk along the gorgeous seaside promenade.
Those who know the Commissario Montalbano movies will, at Donnalucata, be reminded of some of the crime series’ settings. Scenes from, for example, "La voce del violin" ("The Voice of the Violin"), "Il cane di terracotta" ("The Terracotta Dog") and "La forma dell'acqua" ("The Shape of Water") were shot here.
Shooting was also done at the towns of Scicli, Modica and Ragusa, amongst others.
