Seaside holiday home near Ispica - Baroque 'town of churches' on a white limestone plateau

Ispica in the southeast of Sicily owes its name to the nearby gorge – Cava d’Ispica; until 1935 the twon was called Spaccoforno.

The gorge, 13 km in length, ends at Ispica and up to the 1693 earthquake, the settlement was actually located within it. Rebuilt on a white limestone plateau and surrounded by a fertile landscape, Ispica presents itself in baroque splendor.

Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore, located in the square of the same name, with its stucco-decorated ceilings and frescos by Olivio Sozzi, is absolutely worth a visit.

Excursion into baroque surroundings

If you are interested in culture, UNESCO World Heritage listed Modica is a worthwhile destination and only a stone’s throw from Ispica. The setting of the town with its narrow terraced alleys within the wild-romantic landscape is close to perfect. The ruins of the castle with its conspicuously large clock tower catch your eye immediately.

Neither too far from Ispica nor too far from the sea lies also UNESCO World Heritage listed Scicli with its fanciful baroque buildings and beautifully laid-out plazas.

Wide sandy beaches and the nature reserve of the Irminio River

Those interested in culture get their money’s worth in the area around Ispica, but so do ‘water bugs’ at the wide sandy beaches between Portopalo, Santa Marina del Focallo and Scoglitti.

Dune beaches, at which you can also go for a swim in the sea, typical "macchia mediterranea" and rare species of animals make for the charm of Riserva del Fiume Irminio, the nature reserve of the Irminio River, which meets the sea between Marina di Ragusa and Donnalucata.

Kite surfing at Santa Maria del Focallo

Sicily’s largest surf and kite surf center is located at Santa Maria del Focallo.
