Pearl of the Sicilian Baroque

Modica – pearl of the Sicilian Baroque and UNESCO World Heritage. Due to its geographically particular location on the slopes of a canyon, Modica was strategically significant early on. It was recorded by various sources as early as the 3^rd century BC, a thriving agricultural centre under Arab rule and a royal residence under Norman rule. The houses stacked one on top of the other seem to cling to the rock faces and many still have rooms whose walls are formed by the rock. Upon a rocky outcrop visible from all sides, the clock of the former castle dominates the town.

Among the churches particularly worth visiting are surely Duomo di San Pietro, its broad flight of steps lined by the majestic statues of the twelve apostles, and five-nave Duomo San Giorgio. It is best to "climb up" to the latter from the centre of the Old Town via the imposing Baroque staircase of 250 steps. At the church of Santa Maria di Betlemme, there is a well preserved late Gothic portal.

Corso Umberto, the main shopping street of Modica, is flanked by Baroque palazzi with artful decorations and ornate balconies. That is where you will also find recently restored Teatro Garibaldi.

The numerous small alleys with their small steps and archways invite you to stroll about. You can then stop at the typical bars and relax while enjoying a nice hot cup of “Ciccolata Modicana” or a “Granita” and trying some of the innumerable delicious “Dolci”, which the pastry shops here are famous for. For dinner you can chose among a large number of restaurants and pizzerias.

Significant archaeological finds

Upon the territory of the town of Modica, you will find Cava d'Ispica, a 13 km gorge with Siculi burial caves, Greek necropolises and Christian catacombs. An impressing archaeological find which will greatly appeal also to lovers of nature because of its paradisiacal vegetation and quiet.

Excursions to the neighbouring Baroque towns of Scicli, Ragusa Ibla, Palazzolo Acreide and Noto, like Modica listed by the UNESCO as World Heritage Sites, are also worthwhile.

Gorgeous sandy beaches at Marina di Modica

About 20 kilometres off, you will find the bathing resort of the “Modicani”, Marina di Modica at the Costa Iblea. Relaxing and contemplative - for walks as well as a sunbath in winter. In summer, the long sandy beaches invite you to take a refreshing swim in the sea.
